Marijuana and Man Boobs?

It may seem like a mean prank of a rumor but according to several respected research clinics like the Mayo Clinic and other plastic surgeons, it may be true. Maybe. Marijuana does seem to cause enlarged male breast tissue, also known as gynecomastia.

It’s not a huge surprise to the medical community as many cases of gynecomastia are caused from certain drugs and marijuana is a drug.  The theory maintains that frequent marijuana usage cuts down on testosterone in the body and low testosterone can cause breast tissue to develop. However, the studies are still inconclusive and there is some concern that anti-drug bias may have infiltrated some reports. So the jury is still out on if it’s a true side effect of using marijuana.

As I mentioned before, gynecomastia can be attributed to a number of factors. Liver disease, obesity, several medications, testicular tumors, thyroid issues, and lingering adolescent fat tissue are some of the more common causes of gynecomastia. While male breast reduction surgery is not commonly talked about at the water cooler, it is a fairly common procedure and we do quite a few male breast reduction surgeries in Costa Mesa.

If you or someone you know is not happy with their “man boobs” have them consult their doctor first.  There are a considerable amount of other causes of gynecomastia so don’t jump to conclusions. Many professionals believe that it is likely that marijuana smoking increases the chances to develop gynecomastia for those people that have an inclination to develop male breasts and not purely the marijuana.

After you’ve contacted your doctor and identified the cause of gynecomastia, breast reduction can help fix any irreversible effects drugs, lifestyle or other has left on your chest.  More often than not, the problem is hereditary and that can always be helped by the plastic surgeon.  The vast majority of men who undergo male breast reduction surgery are very satisfied their results.
