What Is A Chemical Peel?

Dr. Sajjadian performs chemical peels on an outpatient basis within his gorgeous, relaxing office. Patients are allowed to return home immediately following the procedure, which typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes.

Dr. Sajjadian begins the procedure by creating a chemical solution of alphahydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic or fruit acids), trichloroacetic acids, or other peeling agents, depending on the aesthetic goals of his patient. Chemical peels employ mild fruit acids for skin exfoliation.

After the peel has been applied and begins to dry, you may feel a tingling or mild burning sensation. The extent of this sensation varies depending upon the type of peel.

The depth and type of the chemical peel solution will determine the extent to which the skin will peel. Typically, this takes between 3-10 days.

Patients expect to peel to some degree after treatment, but the extent really depends on your skin’s condition.

  • Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac or any other products containing Retinol.
  • Vitamin A, Salicylic acid, glycolic acid or Benzyl Peroxide.
  • Any exfoliating or scrubbing products.
  • Patients who are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Patients who have used Accutane within the past 4 months
  • Patients who have open wounds, sunburns, infected area, cold sores

  • Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy

After the first full day, you will likely notice some tingling, redness, burning, irritation, or mild swelling. These are all normal sensations and part of the healing process.

In general, peeling starts 48-72 hours post treatment and can last between 2-7 days.

You can resume normal activity after a chemical peel; however, you should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy sweating for 2-3 days.

  • Gently apply a thin layer of moisturizer to the skin numerous times during the day, as recommended.
  • Apply sunscreen with SPF30 or more.
  • Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas, and steam rooms.
  • Don’t over-exfoliate

The required number of chemical peels that one needs to get their desired results will depend upon the treated condition and each patient’s treatment goals. Most patients choose a series of two to five peels. 

Your skin will appear red at first, similar to a sunburn, and then it will begin to peel. Peeling will generally start 48-72 hours after your treatment and can last 2-5 days.
