It’s funny how rumors spread. In Newport Beach we’re frequently asked strange questions about rhinoplasty surgeries so we thought it would be fun to put a few fun facts together for the education and enjoyment of our Newport Beach clientele.
Here are a few recurring questions/statements about rhinoplasty – Can you tell if they are fact or fiction?
- Rhinoplasty can change your voice.
It’s a fact. Any surgery that involves the nose and sinuses such as rhinoplasty, septoplasty and sinus surgery can all potentially affect the quality of your voice. The changes usually are very subtle and only trained musicians can detect it, which is why many vocalists avoid getting nose jobs.
- Your rhinoplasty could melt in the sun.
Not true. This myth is as ridiculous as it sounds but there is a shred of truth to it. Instant nose jobs sold on the black market have been known to use candle wax injections to reshape the nose. It doesn’t take a genius to know that candle wax and heat don’t mix well. As you would imagine, these methods are illegal and we do not recommend them in any way shape or form in Newport Beach. We only use rubberized silicon or biological tissue that is legal and will absolutely not melt in the sun.
- Rhinoplasty could cause you to lose your sense of smell.
Unfortunately, this can happen but it is only temporary. Immediately following a rhinoplasty surgery, your sense of smell will be less than what it was before surgery. Again, this side effect along with the subsequent decrease in taste is temporary. It usually resolves once the swelling decreases in about three to six weeks. It is incredibly rare for permanent loss of smell can occur from a rhinoplasty.
- One option for rhinoplasty is a detachable nose?
This is pure fiction. Strange rumors exist that Michael Jackson had a detachable plastic nose as an option for rhinoplasty. Michael Jackson never had a detachable nose. Apparently that was just a nasty rumor started by Ray Hultman, a juror from Jackson’s 2005 trial.
