Here in Costa Mesa and across the nation, the most popular breast enhancement surgery is the breast augmentation surgery. During this procedure the breasts are enlarged by breast implants placed under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle beneath the breast. The enhancement comes from a breast implant that is composed of a soft silicone shell filled with silicone gel or a saline (saltwater) solution.
Very often we will enhance the breast further with a breast lift (a.k.a. mastopexy) at the same time as the breast augmentation. Breast lifts raise sagging or droopy breasts and elevate the nipple and areola to give the breasts a more youthful, perkier appearance. To lift the breasts, we take excess skin from the bottom of the breast and the area around the areola is removed. The remaining skin is then brought together, which tightens and raises the breast. Compared to enhancement with implants alone, a breast lift requires larger incisions and incisions may extend from the areola down to the crease where the bottom of the breast meets the chest.
Immediately after breast enhancement surgeries, gauze is taped over the stitched incisions, and the chest is wrapped in an elastic bandage or supported by a special bra. Here in Costa Mesa we remove the stitches typically in 7 to 10 days. We prepare our Costa Mesa clients to expect some swelling, bruising, and soreness in their general chest area for a few weeks following any breast enhancement surgery. Rest, rest and more rest along with medicine can help relieve the pain. A supportive sports-like bra worn twenty four hours a day can help reduce swelling and support the breasts while they heal.
After a week or so, most of our Costa Mesa breast augmentation clients say they are comfortable enough to resume normal work and social activities, unless those activities involve heavy lifting or other strenuous physical activities. During the first few follow up first post-breast enhancement surgery, we can evaluate the healing and better judge when it will be safe and wise to return to more vigorous exercise and activities.
