Why You Should Invest in Laser Hair Removal Before Summer

Shaving commercials make the process seem easy. Then you climb in the shower and reality hits. How does hair even grow there? Is shaving cream supposed to make such a mess? Why is this taking so long? Do I really have to do this every day? If you’ve missed out on a beach trip or two because you simply can’t handle a last-minute shave again, we can help. Our laser hair removal treatments take the hassle out of hair removal.

Shaving vs. Laser Hair Removal

Shaving removes hair at the skin line, leaving the root intact underneath the skin. It’s essentially a hair cut for your legs or lady parts. The problem is, hair is always growing, even while you sleep. Those silky smooth legs this morning will be prickly by night, and in a few days, shorts and swimsuits are a no-go. It’s a never ending battle that you’ll never win.

Laser hair removal fights hair growth at its source, the hair follicle under the skin. The laser energy works under the skin, damaging the hair follicles and stopping future growth. Results from a laser treatment last much longer than shaving. Many of our patients enjoy permanent hair reduction in the treated areas.

Understanding the Laser Hair Removal Process

Our Newport Beach plastic surgery office is fully equipped with the latest laser equipment for a safe and effective hair reduction treatment. Call us to learn more about your options or schedule your first session.

Prior to treatment, Dr. Sajjadian meets with each patient. He’ll answer your questions, provide a basic overview of the procedure, and give recovery instructions. He’ll also take a peek at your skin and ask you about your medical history. We want our patients to love every treatment they receive with us, and take the time to ensure that each treatment is a good fit before we start. If we don’t think that laser removal will work for you, we’ll tell you so you don’t waste time or money on a treatment that won’t effective remove hair.

When we’re ready to begin treatment, you’ll put on a pair of special protective goggles. The laser we use is very powerful and the goggles will keep your eyes safe. The treatment area needs to be clean shaven or have relatively short hair for a laser treatment; if needed we’ll shave the area to prep it for the laser. We may also apply a topical numbing cream to increase comfort.

After the skin is prepped, it is time for the laser. The laser handpiece will be passed over the skin and activated. If we’re treating a small area, like the upper lip, we’ll be finished in minutes. Larger areas can take an hour or more. Our laser spot size is large and can effective treat large and small areas, everywhere from the armpits and legs to the abdomen.

After the hair removal is finished, you’ll leave our office and immediately can resume daily activities.

Don’t expect immediate hair loss. When you leave our office, your skin will be red and slightly swollen, and most of your hair, still there. The magic happens over the next few weeks as treated hairs shed and fall out. At first, it may look like continued growth, but be patient. The hair will fall out soon. Each treatment only targets a portion of the hairs in an area and several visits will be needed for silky smooth, hairless skin.

Preparing for Your Summertime Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Prep is minimal for a laser treatment. We’ll give you specific instructions when you book your visit, but remember, this process is designed to save you time and we handle most of the work.

Here are a few things you can do in preparation of your hair removal in Newport Beach, CA:

  • Don’t Wax or Tweeze- Shaving cuts off hair, leaving the follicle under the skin. Waxing and tweezing pull the hair out, leaving nothing behind for the laser to target. If you’re going to invest in laser hair removal, skip waxing and tweezing for several weeks in preparation. Shaving is a safe method for hair removal before laser treatment.
  • No Tanning or Sunless Tanners- Our laser device targets melanin, a type of pigment in the hair. Melanin is also found in the skin, at much higher levels when the skin is tanned. If you’re tan, the laser won’t be as effective. Sunless tanners also interfere with laser treatments and should be avoided. During the summer this can be challenging, but smooth legs and a hair-free bikini line are worth the extra effort.
  • Give Yourself a Shave- Long hair can burn the skin during a laser treatment. Shave the area we’re treating the day before you come in. Remember, it will be a week or two before you see results from your laser treatment; you’re going to want a fresh shave.

Recovery After Laser Hair Removal

We love beautiful Southern California all year round, but during the summer, our hearts live at the beach. We know you don’t want to hole up for weeks recovering from a laser treatment. With laser hair reduction, you don’t have to. Our patients return to daily activities immediately with few activity restrictions. Missing work or social engagements isn’t necessary.

If you’ve ever experienced a mild sunburn, you have a good idea what recovery will feel like. The skin will be red, slightly tender, and mildly swollen. If it bothers you, use a cold compress to cool and relieve the area. Dr. Sajjadian can also recommend post-treatment moisturizing creams to soothe skin irritation. These side effects are temporary and resolve in a day or two.

When you hit the beach, make sure you use sunscreen. After laser treatments, the skin is more likely to discolor temporarily if exposed to too much sun.

Laser Hair Removal Challenges

Cosmetic lasers are one of our favorite options for hair removal, but good results require careful planning and the right patient. Learn about the challenges associated with this long lasting hair removal option.

Red, Gray, or Light Colored Hair

There are two different types of melanin. The pigment eumelanin is abundant in dark colored hair and is the type of melanin targeted by our laser. Patients with red or blonde hair have higher levels of another type of melanin, pheomelanin. Laser hair removal may be less effective for patients with red, gray, or blonde hair coloration.

Lighter hair isn’t an automatic disqualification for laser treatment, but it is something that we’ll need to chat about. Generally, darker blondes and reds respond better to treatment than lighter colorations.  Dark brown and black hair is best.

Dark Skin Tones

Contrast between skin and hair makes it easier for the laser to target hair, without burning the skin.  We achieve our best results on fair to olive skinned patients with dark hair.

Hair Thickness

Fine, thin hair is less responsive to laser treatment. Our cosmetic lasers do an excellent job on bikini lines and leg hair, but aren’t as effective on that fine, vellus hair on the face, aka “peach fuzz”. The thicker your hair, the better your results. For fine hair, ask us about other treatment options.

Laser Only Treats Actively Growing Hair

Hair cycles through three growth phases: active or anagen, transitional or catagen, and resting or telogen. Laser hair removal only treats actively growing hair. At any given time, you’ll have hair in all three phases on the body.

To ensure that every hair on the body receives laser energy while in the growth phase, we’ll perform multiple hair removal treatments. Each session is spaced a few weeks apart, so hairs can cycle into a new phase before the next treatment is performed. You’ll see hair reduction after each treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

When we ask patients how their hair removal treatment feels, the responses are varied. Some report a slight pinch when the laser fires. Others compare the sensation to a hot snap of a rubber band. Many patients say that laser hair removal is less painful than waxing or tweezing.

Whatever your pain tolerance, we want you to feel comfortable during treatment. We have anesthetic creams available and can numb the treatment area prior to using the laser. Some laser devices are equipped with cooling mechanisms to increase patient comfort.

What Areas Can Laser Hair Removal Treat?

If you have hair there, our lasers can probably treat it. We perform laser hair reduction from head to toe. Popular areas for summertime treatment on women include:

  • Underarms
  • Bikini line
  • Legs

Men love laser hair reduction too and come in for summertime back and chest hair removal.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Laser hair reduction is a process, and most patients will need several treatments. How many will you need? There isn’t a simple answer to this question. Your hair and skin color, along with the area that we’re treating will affect your results. Typically, 2-6 treatment sessions are needed.

We realize that its summer now and you may be worried that its too late for laser hair reduction this season. Although you likely won’t achieve full results this summer, we still encourage you to come in. Each treatment will remove a percentage of hair, from the very first treatment. If you start hair reduction now, you’ll have less hair and smoother skin by the end of the summer. Since results are long lasting, you’ll likely enjoy the results next summer and beyond too. And don’t forget, summer isn’t the only time for hair removal. In beautiful Southern California, its shorts weather most of the year.

Are Results Permanent?

Our laser hair reduction treatments offer long lasting results, near permanent for many patients. Hair can grow back, often many months or years later. Usually, this regrowth is still much less hair than you had prior to treatment. If regrowth occurs and bothers you, schedule a touch-up hair removal treatment or two.

Silky Smooth Legs Are Just the Beginning- Other Options for Summer Body Perfection

  • Vein Therapy- Shorts and spider veins aren’t a happy combination. Our vein therapy treatments can fade spider veins, varicose veins, and other visible leg vein abnormalities. This treatment is an excellent complement to hair removal on the legs.
  • Gynecomastia Treatment- Our most popular summer cosmetic treatment for men is male breast reduction. Take off your top without embarrassment from over developed male breast tissue.
