What to Expect From a Neck Lift

It’s not uncommon for us to get questions here in our Newport Beach office about neck lifts, what they are and what to expect from one.  A neck lift is basically a set of procedures that enhances and rejuvenates the appearance of your neck. The procedures focus on removing excess skin or fat, eliminating or reducing neck bands and/or removing or tightening neck muscles if necessary.

The ideal candidates for a neck lift are those who are in general good health. For those who have other medical issues, like diabetes or heart disease, it’s always best to double check with your primary care provider before undergoing any type of surgery. Smoking is also a hazard not only to your health overall but when it comes to surgery, smokers have an increased risk for complications and a slower rate of healing so we recommend smokers quit smoking six weeks before having procedures like a neck lift.

Before proceeding with surgery, we spend a great deal of time with our clients to hear what they have in mind and what they would like their end results to be. The most common concerns that our patirntd request a neck lift for, may include: The infamous “turkey wattle” neck, stubborn excess fat that remains under the chin despite good body fat ratio elsewhere in the body; skin that has sagged due to age or drastic weight loss.

To remove a “turkey wattle”, small cuts are made under the chin or behind the ears, or both, to access a neck muscle called the platysma. Occasionally the platysma will be removed if it has been too stretched out and can’t be tightened. If there is excess fat, liposuction can be performed before excess skin or muscle is removed. Additionally, on an outpatient basis, Botox® injections can relax parts of the platysma that are responsible for the “band” appearance or look of fullness.
