What Procedures Do I Need to Get My Flat Tummy Back?
If you think your flat tummy is long gone after pregnancy or weight loss, you’re wrong. It’s just hiding, often under layers of fat and loose skin, but you may need a little help to get it back. Liposuction and a tummy tuck are two of our most popular and effective options for restoring the appearance of the abdomen. With one, or both, of these procedures you can get your body back.
Which treatment do you need? Learn a little more about each option below or schedule a consultation with Dr. Sajjadian for personalized advice.
- Tummy Tuck– A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat and tightens abdominal muscles. It is ideal for patients that have loose skin or abdominal muscle separation after pregnancy. If you’ve lost a lot of weight, a tummy tuck is often the only way to restore a flat, tight appearance to the abdomen. This procedure is a common choice after pregnancy and after massive weight loss. Results are permanent, but the abdominal skin and muscles can stretch out again with future pregnancies or weight gain/loss.
- Liposuction- Liposuction removes fat cells from the body. It isn’t a weight loss treatment, but is an excellent option for shaping and sculpting particular areas. It is especially helpful for patients that have isolated fat pockets, but that are close to their ideal weight. Liposuction on the abdomen can restore a flat tummy on patients with tight skin, but some extra abdominal fat. Liposuction results are long lasting. You can still gain weight, but the fat cells we’ve removed won’t typically regenerate. With diet and exercise many patients enjoy lifelong results.
During your consultation we’ll help you decide if you need liposuction, a tummy tuck, or both.
Is Going to the Gym as Effective as a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?
Many men and women think that hitting the gym more will eliminate the need for a tummy tuck or liposuction. For some patients it will, but most of the time surgery is the best way to get your flat tummy back. Exercise alone can’t get rid of excess skin. It doesn’t matter how many sit-ups you do, that extra skin isn’t going anywhere. A tummy tuck removes this unwanted skin and is often necessary after massive weight loss or pregnancy. Many women experience separation of the abdominal muscles after pregnancy. Exercise alone won’t correct this either. Stubborn fat is often resistant to diet and exercise. You don’t need a tummy tuck because you don’t go to the gym enough. You need a tummy tuck because weight loss and pregnancy are hard on the body and many people need help getting their flat tummy back.
Try the gym, but if you aren’t seeing the results that you need, come see us. For many patients a tummy tuck or liposuction will be the only way to restore a tight, flat abdominal area.
