It’s not uncommon at all here in Costa Mesa to have teens come into our office interested in getting teen rhinoplasty. Nose jobs (also known as rhinoplasties) are the most common cosmetic surgery done among American teens. The nose is one of the most noticeable features of the face and having a nose job can make a dramatic difference in an individual’s confidence, self-esteem and social network. Looks of course aren’t everything but when the outside doesn’t match what you feel on the inside turmoil and conflict typical arises, especially in the adolescent years when so much is going on.
It is very important however that before getting a rhinoplasty, the teenage nose must reach its adult size. This typically happens around age 15 or 16 for girls and maybe a year or two later for boys. The types of rhinoplasties that we frequently do on teens here in Costa Mesa usually include: removing a hump on the nose, straightening the bridge reshaping the nose’s tip, increasing or decreasing the size of the nostrils, correcting the nose after an injury, open breathing passages and making the nose bigger or smaller.
As with any type of surgery, there are risks with rhinoplasty. Although rare, risks include bleeding, infection, and allergic reaction to anaesthesia. Immediately following a rhinoplasty there may be some numbness, occasional nosebleeds, swelling, bruising around the eyes (because when lying down blood pools in any empty space).
Before proceeding with a nose job, we encourage parents to sit down and thoroughly discuss the procedure with their teen as we will do in consultation. A rhinoplasty involves more than just the external appearance of a nose. We want to be sure that all teens we operate on understand the procedure and what to expect. It’s important that the teen is mature enough to handle a surgery and the effects it will have physically and emotionally. We want to make sure the teen is doing it for appropriate reasons, and also has realistic expectations about the results. Thinking a nose job with change your whole life and make you more popular is not a healthy realistic expectation and to avoid disappointment we’ll try to address these issues before hand.
