Tighten and Tone with a Tummy Tuck

There are plenty of everyday life events and special occasions where looking and feeling great are important. Many of us want to look our best during vacations, weddings, anniversaries, and among peers professionally and socially. A tummy tuck can give you the confidence to wear a bikini, but it will also make your clothes look better on you.

For some, toning and shaping their arms and legs is easy, but the stomach proves to be stubborn and can lose its shape after weight loss and pregnancy. Men, as well as women, are opting to achieve a slim silhouette with the life-changing results of plastic surgery. While many women are interested in tummy tucks, the procedure is popular for men as well, who enjoy improved confidence from looking younger and feeling lighter.

In a competitive, youth-oriented society, plastic surgery is becoming a part of achieving improved self-esteem and body tone and shape. All these benefits can leave you feeling rejuvenated in your personal life or even for accelerating your career.  If you’ve been struggling to achieve your ideal results through a healthy nutrition plan and exercise alone, plastic surgery can provide the necessary boost to provide you with a flat midsection.

Definition of a Tummy Tuck

The term tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is part of the American vernacular but what does it really mean? The American Society of Plastic Surgery defines a tummy tuck as a procedure that “removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.”

Contributing factors to a protruding belly include age, genetics, pregnancy, and serious weight loss. As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and can begin to droop. This, in combination with pregnancy or lack of exercise, can create an unattractive appearance that makes patients feel self-conscious in their everyday lives.

Who Sees Best Muscle Tone after a Tummy Tuck?

Good candidates for this procedure must be at their optimal weight, do not smoke or are willing to quit, and are in general good health. They also have realistic expectations as to what can and cannot be accomplished with a tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck should not be used to lose weight. Rather, think of tummy tucks as the best method to fine-tune results after you have achieved your weight loss goals; a tummy tuck is capable of tightening skin and improving contours. A tummy tuck may also incentivize you maintain a healthy diet.  A 2013 study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgery found many post abdominoplasty patients showed sustained weight loss and were motivated by seeing results of their procedure. If you are willing to invest in yourself and your health pre and post-treatment, you can enjoy the best possible results from care.

Pregnancy and Tummy Tucks

After pregnancy, many women find they have developed loose abdominal skin or that their efforts to tone their stomachs with exercise alone did not produce desired results. This is often because the structure of the abdominal wall has changed; muscles that were once vertically aligned are now separated and will not create the ideal shape and tone through healthy physical activity. This condition is called diastasis recti and is corrected through a tummy tuck.

During the procedure, excess skin and small fat deposits are removed. Muscles are also repaired and realigned, allowing patients to achieve flat midsections through targeted exercise routines.

What can a Tummy Tuck Correct?

A tummy tuck can tighten the abdominal muscle and restore a youthful shape to your body. The results are dramatic, but will not address every area where you may have aesthetic concerns, such as the back and flanks.   A tummy tuck will not eliminate cellulite, love handles, or saddlebags and will not reverse stretch marks; however, some of these aesthetic concerns may become less obvious once the skin is tightened.

if you are interested in comprehensive fat removal to completely shape your upper and lower body, tummy tuck surgery is often paired with liposuction. This pair of treatments allows patients to enjoy an all-new appearance that completely meets their aesthetic goals.

What Fees are Involved with a Tummy Tuck?

You will be charged for your doctor’s service, general or local anesthetic, and a facility fee. The vast majority of patients are delighted with their tummy tucks, but occasionally additional surgery may be required, especially if they have decided on liposuction to sculpt surrounding areas.  Make sure you speak about costs associated with your initial procedure or any follow-up appointments and treatments. If you have a hernia associated with abdominal issues, your insurance company may pick up part of the surgery as related to medical/health concerns; most insurance providers do not cover purely aesthetic procedures.

Phases of Care:  Treatment Planning, Surgery, and Recovery

All cosmetic surgeries should be carefully considered with the help of patient education, research, and an in-depth consultation with your surgeon. At your first appointment with a board-certified plastic surgeon, your health history will be examined to determine if you are a candidate for an abdominoplasty.  Your surgeon may suggest additional procedures to improve your results – such as liposuction that can be done in tandem with a tummy tuck.  Determining your current aesthetic concerns, underlying issues, and how to best correct them is the ideal path to satisfying results.

On the day of your surgery shower and wash your hair, so you won’t have to worry about this while you are required to maintain limited activity. Your surgery will be completed in 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of treatment.  When you awake from the anesthesia, you will be wearing a compression garment and will most likely feel tightness in your midsection from muscle repair.  You may also feel soreness at the incision site and experience swelling or bruising.  Drains are placed to collect fluid into small bulbs; this prevents infection and allows you to heal comfortably from treatment.

You will need to plan for at-home recovery.  You should have someone drive you to your procedure, which may be performed at an outpatient surgery center or hospital, as well as someone to drive you home. Prepare an area for your recovery at your home where you can have quick access to all items you may need, such as bottled water and electronics, including your phone, tablet, laptop, and remote.  Part of treatment planning will also include making arrangements to take the necessary time off from work. If you have small children at home, arrange for someone to help for the first few days, as you will be required to maintain limited physical activity, especially until the drains are removed. Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding your medications prior to surgery to ensure your recovery period is as successful as possible.

Once home, follow your doctor’s instructions. The day of the procedure and a few days following there will be some discomfort.  You will need to sleep in an elevated position.  You should be allowed to remove your compression garment with 24-48 hours post-surgery for a shower; however, you will need to put the garment back on and ensure you wear it for the recommended time. Your doctor will prescribe medication, including pain reliever and antibiotics, to help alleviate any pain.  Please use pain reliever responsibly and finish your antibiotics to prevent infection. The first week’s recovery is the most challenging; however, it’s important to understand that proper healing a vital part of seeing best results.  Try to be patient with the healing process. Your doctor will have you walking very short distances immediately following surgery and can increase physical activity recommendations as the healing process progresses.

At a follow-up appointment with your doctor, your drains will be removed. Within two weeks, you will be able to return to work.  You may also return to a fitness routine three to four weeks after treatment, so you can enjoy all the benefits of looking great and feeling great.

Picking the Right Plastic Surgeon

Your choice of plastic surgeon is critical to the outcome of your surgery.  Safety and attractive results are key criteria for many patients shopping for the right practitioner. Referrals can be powerful as well; cosmetic surgery is no longer a taboo subject, and most people who have positive experiences with their surgeries are happy to share.  Ask around to get names of qualified surgeons.  You can also read reviews provided by actual, satisfied patients to determine the quality of the work provided. Browse through before and after galleries on your chosen plastic surgeon’s website to determine that you like their approach to treatment, as well as the final aesthetic results.  Your first consultation can also be a valuable factor in determining how comfortable you will feel under your plastic surgeon’s care. Your chosen physician should take the time to explain the treatment, help you choose the right option or procedure method, and provide plenty of details regarding aftercare and what you can reasonably expect from your investment.
