Sometimes, exercise alone just isn’t enough to create better muscle definition in the lower legs. If the individual is otherwise muscular, skinny calves can be embarrassing and out of proportion with the upper legs and the rest of the body. This is especially a problem for men, whose calves might continue to look feminine no matter how much they work out. Calf enlargement helps both men and women to stop feeling self-conscious in shorts and swimsuits.
Dr. Sajjadian, a triple-board certified plastic surgeon, is an expert in enhancing the appearance of the calf muscle. He uses one of two methods for calf enlargement – calf implants and fat grafting (fat transfer).
During your consultation, he will carefully listen to your concerns and ask you how you wish your calves to look. He will then recommend implants or fat grafts in order to achieve your results and will explain the procedure to you thoroughly.
Calf augmentation is also often used to correct abnormalities from injury or disease, such as club foot or spina bidifa.
Results of Calf Enlargement / Calf Implants
After your calf augmentation surgery, your calves will look naturally toned, shapely, and symmetrical with the rest of your leg and body, per your specifications.
Whether you get implants or fat grafts, your results are permanent and will feel like natural muscle tissue.

The Calf Implant Procedure
If your calf enlargement involves calf implants, the silicone implants will be inserted through a 3-inch incision in the crease behind the knee. That way, the scar will be hardly noticeable.
The implants are custom-made for you so that they match your size, your muscle definition, and the shape you want. Dr. Sajjadian places them over the calf muscle for a natural look and closes the incision with stitches. The function and movement of your legs won’t change; the implants will simply improve the look of your legs.
This surgery is conducted either under a local anesthetic and IV sedation or under general anesthesia.
Fat Grafting to the Calves Procedure
If fat grafting is used to enlarge your calves, the fat will be extracted from other areas of your body (usually the thighs, buttocks, or abdomen) using liposuction. This involves making a small incision and inserting a cannula (tube) and syringe that suction out the needed fat cells.
The fat is then injected over the calf muscles with a needle. Dr. Sajjadian is very skilled at using fat injections to contour the calf muscles for a shapelier and more toned look.
Recovery from Calf Enlargement
Recovery from fat grafting/fat transfer is a bit faster than from implants. After fat injections, you can return to work after just a few days.
If you have had implants, Dr. Sajjadian will remove the dressings over your incisions within a couple of days, and the stitches in about a week. You shouldn’t walk too much for the first two days and should keep your legs elevated to reduce swelling. You might need some help getting to and from the bathroom. By day three, you can begin walking, but it may take 2-3 weeks before you feel that your stride is completely back to normal.
After either implants or fat grafting, you should avoid strenuous exercise for about six weeks. Both techniques leave you with some bruising, swelling, and soreness. After fat transfer, these symptoms will go away within a few days. After implants, it will take a bit longer – perhaps a couple of weeks.
Dr. Sajjadian will give you a prescription for pain medication and an antibiotic, which will reduce your discomfort and prevent infection. He will also give you full instructions to care for yourself and speed your healing process as much as possible.
