Belly Button

Belly button abnormalities can often result from birth, but in some cases develop later in life. Dr. Sajjadian uses the belly button surgery to correct belly buttons that are are puffy, too large, too deep, or generally have an unusual shape. Dr. Sajjadian can perform a safe belly button enhancement to remedy this abnormality.

Belly button surgery is often performed on people who are “outies” or who were born with irregularly shaped belly buttons. Sometimes, the belly button’s appearance changes its shape due to pregnancy, weight gain or loss, injury, surgery, or aging.

Belly button repair (umbilicoplasty) is usually a simple surgery with a fast recovery. Dr. Sajjadian is triple-board certified and has extensive experience correcting belly button abnormalities. He can provide you with a more attractive, less conspicuous navel.

Belly button revision is also often performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck or post-geriatric body contouring such as extended abdominoplasty.

Results of Belly Button Surgery

Belly button surgery can correct a belly button that is bulging/protruding, puffy, too large, too deep, or has an unusual shape. The procedure creates a small, vertical, symmetrical belly button.

Prior to your procedure, Dr. Sajjadian will spend a considerable amount of time with you to find out what you dislike about your belly button and how you would like it to look.

The results of your belly button surgery are permanent, but changes can still occur later due to pregnancy, substantial weight gain or loss, injury, or internal surgeries near the navel.

The Belly Button Surgery Procedure

Using very small incisions so that scars are hidden inside the belly button, Dr. Sajjadian removes any excess tissue and reshapes your belly button to a pleasing shape per your specifications. Small hernias can be repaired at the same time.

Your surgery should take about an hour but may take longer depending on the complexity of your case.

Because this is a simple outpatient procedure, most patients are under a local anesthetic and IV sedation during the surgery rather than general anesthesia.

Recovery from Belly Button Surgery

If your work is not physically demanding and if your surgery has not been extensive, you may be able to return to work as soon as you feel ready. Some minor soreness, bruising, and inflammation is normal after the surgery, but it usually only lasts a few days. You can take pain medication, if necessary.

You can shower right away, and Dr. Sajjadian will remove any non-dissolvable stitches within 7-10 days during one of your follow-up visits.

The scars will fade over the next few months, but in most cases, they are hidden within the belly button.
